4 Ways to Stay Cool as a Public Relations Professional

A heat wave is never a surprise and hopefully, neither is a “heat wave” for us public relations professionals. Whether that means dealing with several urgent media requests at once or balancing tough client questions, it’s our job to always manage the situation, allay concerns and maintain clear communication– especially when we’re in the hot seat!

In honor of the swamp-like weather engulfing the East Coast, here are four ways to help us in PR stay cool, calm and collected during tough moments:

Take a water break.  In the heat of the moment, responding urgently will only add fuel to the fire.  Take five minutes to grab a cup of water, and assess the issue.  Look at the full picture before determining an action plan.

Go at slower speeds. When juggling a number of different tasks and clients stay calm and work through one at a time. Working on too many items at once may cause you to overheat.

Remember, winter is coming (eventually). Keep in mind that even during the stickiest of PR situations, there will be a solution reached and things will move along to a normal status (and temperature). Do your best to keep calm, address the situation and come to solution.

Find out why the “air conditioning” isn’t working.  Pinpoint exactly what the core issue is and say it aloud to yourself or a colleague (is it the humidity?). Once you’re able express the problem, and you hear it yourself, the path to resolution will be clear. It will only get hotter if you’re wrapped up in the details!
